“FTC Considers Challenge to Food Merger” (Wall Street Journal)

The Wall Street Journal has an interesting article today on the Federal Trade Commission’s interest in the announced merger between U. S. Foods and Sysco, two of the country’s biggest food suppliers.  The article notes that the FTC, which has been investigated the planned merger for months, may file suit to prevent it, or may seek to impose other conditions, such as divestiture of assets.  (That is what Dollar Tree has offered to do in order to gain antitrust approval in its bid to buy out rival Dollar General.)  The article includes useful examples of the types of concerns that influence the FTC’s decision-making in these kinds of mergers.
